Why getting help matters

We found in a joint study published in May 2014 by Aon Hewitt and Financial Engines that employees using employer-provided professional investment help had better returns on their 401(k) retirement investments than those who didn’t use help.*

This study focused on the use of managed accounts, online advice, and target date funds. It revealed that, on average, median annual returns for employees who got help were more than 3% (332 basis points, net of fees) higher than people who didn’t get help across the six-year period covered by the study.

Getting professional investment advice is a way to help you make the most of your money for retirement. Financial Engines can help.

Analysis based on participant data for the period of January 2006-December 2012. The Help category includes participants who, at the time of the study, were target date fund users with 95% or more of their portfolio in one or two target date funds; managed account users; and online advice users who used the service in the prior 12 months. Within Help group, managed accounts and online advice provided by Financial Engines Advisors L.L.C. Financial Engines does not sponsor or serve as investment adviser to target date funds. Help Participants, on average, experienced median returns more than 3% (332 basis points) higher than Non-Help Participants, net of fees, including fund-specific management and expense fees, and managed account fees where applicable. To demonstrate the returns impact, the potential outcomes were compared of a Help participant versus a Non-Help participant after 20 years, where each invests a lump sum of $10,000 at age 45.
